For the great Russian painter Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin, Valaam served as a kind of school that honed the artist's already unique skill. In these places there were many landscape painters who worked in summer in nature. However, not only artists drew inspiration here. Valaam was visited by Tchaikovsky, Mendeleev and other geniuses.

In total, Shishkin depicted 8 sketches that made up his famous Valaam series, including Pine on Valaam. The artist admired Valaam, not paying attention to the very severe weather. He was interested in the pristine nature of the archipelago, the monumentality of the rocks, and of course, centuries-old trees, whose roots pierced the firmament.

The main feature of the work of Ivan Shishkin even then became the depth of perception of nature, a fanatical enthusiasm in the image of nature. In the slender as a girl’s camp, the pine tree feels every brush stroke, the master’s thoroughness. At the same time, the artist focuses on the severity of both the locality and life in general: this is evidenced by many characteristic details, the most striking of which, of course, is the old cross, leaning against a beautiful tree.

Valaam sketches Shishkin made a splash. Many members of the Academy of Arts stated that they had never seen such sketches written from nature, and this served as the reason for awarding Shishkin a silver medal. As the master himself ironically wrote - They wanted to give gold, but postponed until March. In the same year, the emperor visited Balaam with his wife. The monks handed the empress a picture she liked very much, which turned out to be the work of Shishkin, and before that he had presented the monastery with a gift.
